The chapters comprised in the present volumewere written at various times during the last tenyears. Some of them have already appeared inprint in the pages of the Field, Land and Water,and other papers, but the majority have remainedin manuscript until now. The greatest part of thematter in the chapters on the "Lion" was writtensome years ago, and was intended to be thecommencement of a book dealing entirely with thelife-history of South African mammals.
