PREFACE.

Notwithstanding the numerous volumeswhich have been given to the public relative tothe glorious operations of the British Army, forrescuing Portugal and Spain from the grasp of theinvader, the Author of this work flatters himselfthat it will not be found deficient in novelty orinterest. He acknowledges that, according toprecedent, scenes and incidents have been introducedinto it which are purely imaginary, and whetherhe ought to apologize for these, or to make a meritof them, he must leave his readers to decide,according to their individual tastes and predilections.

It will need no great sagacity to discriminatebetween this portion and the veritable historicaland military details, the result of the experience ofone,[*] who had the honour of serving in thatgallant corps to which these volumes more especiallyrelate, during the whole of its brilliant course ofservice in the Peninsula, and who participated inall the proud feelings which arose whencontemplating the triumphant career of an army, whosedeeds and victories are unsurpassed in the annalsof war.

Most of the military operations, and many ofthe characters, will be familiar to the survivors ofthe second division, and brother-officers willrecognise many old associates in the convivialities ofthe mess-table, and in the perils of the battle-field.The names of others belong to history, and withthem the political or military reader will be alreadyacquainted.

It is impossible for a writer to speak of his ownproductions, without exposing himself to imputationsof either egotism or affected modesty; theAuthor therefore will merely add, that he truststhat most readers may discover something toattract in these volumes, which depict from thelife the stirring events and all the romance ofwarfare, with the various lights and shades of militaryservice, the principal
