FOREWORD

The greater part of A Surgeon in Arms waswritten before the United States entered the war inApril, 1917. Therefore, the Americans are notmentioned in many paragraphs in which the soldiersof the other allies are spoken of. The Canadiansoldiers on the Western front have won undying famefor their marvelous feats in many actions, from thefirst battle of Ypres in April, 1915, to Vimy Ridgein April, 1917. As soldiers they take a place secondto none. And, I believe, the American soldiers will,in the lines, show the same courage, dash, andinitiative, and win the same fighting reputation and honorsas the Canadians; for do not Americans and Canadiansinherit the same blood, literature, history, andtraditions; do they not both live in the same widespaces, speak the same mother tongue, aspire to thesame ideals, and enjoy the same free institutions?
